December 1, 2009 - The Exumas, which are part of the Bahamas, are a collection of 365 cays and islands stretching over 120 miles.  Two main islands, Great Exuma, and Little Exuma, form the southern tip.  Hidden coves, bays, and harbours throughout are magnets for yachts and sportfisherman.  The waters are so shallow in the Exumas, that cruise ships and many sailing yachts cannot get there.  But private charter yachts like the ones listed at the bottom can take you to a place so close to home, but far enough away to be romantic and secluded.

 

 

The following is a sample itinerary from an experienced charter captain, for a week long charter in the Exumas.

Day One:

Nassau to Highborne Cay

This island contains one of the loveliest beaches in the Bahamas.  We have the choice of berthing in a marina with all the conveniences or the solitude of an anchorage.

Day Two:

Highborne Cay to Normans Cay

15nm

Around high tide we will depart for Normans Cay.  Upon arrival your choice of activities will begin; such as snorkeling "airplane reef" and enjoying water sports with the wave runner/tender.  After lunch a short ride to Shroud Cay to anchor for the night.

Day Three:

Shroud Cay

There are many adventures to be had around Shroud Cay, exploring the mangroves by wave runner or relaxing on pristine beaches.

Day Four:

Shroud Key to Warderick Wells

Enjoy the Exumas Cays land and sea park where you can stretch your legs on the four miles of trails where you will see rare plants and caves.  The toys are always ready and at your disposal.

Day Five:

Warderick Wells to Staniel Cay

38 nm

Staniel Cay is famous for its fishing and its Caribbean style yacht club.  Throw in a line or head to the James Bond Thunderball cave for an amazing snorkel.  End your day with dinner on board the yacht or head for a rum punch, salty sea stories and a 7:30 seating at the yacht club.

Day Six:

Staniel Cay to Paradise Island

106nm

After an early departure for Paradise Island, enjoy lunch and a swim stop at Cistern Cay.  Upon arriving at Atlantis you can browse the many boutiques, check out the ‘Dig’, join in a hand of Blackjack or dance the night away.

Day Seven:

Paradise Island

Have a farewell breakfast on board, relax or pick up any last minute souvenirs before heading to the airport and dreaming about your next charter.
